It's that time of year again when new names and faces venture into racing and compete to make themselves known. The two-year-old colts and fillies that are starting to make themselves known are the future of our sport. As time goes on, they will be the ones that we will look to when it comes time to find our next contenders for legendary races of the sport, such as the Breeders' Cup, the Kentucky Oaks, and the Triple Crown events. It is too early to say which two-year-olds today will be the next stars of tomorrow, but at the moment, there are a few that stand out from the others.

While there are already quite a few youngsters that have already turned in a few races, today we are going to focus on some colts and fillies that have either just started out, or haven't raced at all yet. Their worth is still yet to be proven, but thanks to the potential power that can be found coursing through their bloodlines, their names deserve to be known just as well.

A bay colt by the name of Speculating has a rich family tree that is sure to turn some heads. The leggy colt is by the red-hot stallion, Medaglia d’Oro. Ranked as the 10th leading sire in the nation for 2018, Medaglia d’Oro is responsible for producing legendary runners, such as Preakness Stakes champion and 2009 Horse of the Year, Rachel Alexandra, multiple graded stakes winner, Songbird, and Wonder Gadot, who recently destroyed the boys in both the Queen's Plate and Prince of Whales Stakes, the first two jewels of Canada's Triple Crown.

As impressive of a stallion that Speculating is by, the lure does not end there. Class and potential runs deep within the maternal side of this colt’s family. His dam, Well Dressed (by Notebook), has produced eight winners from her nine foals to race, including the incomparable, Well Armed. Throughout his career, Well Armed won and placed in multiple graded stakes races, including a scintillating victory in the 2009 Dubai World Cup, where fans across the globe watched him romp to a record-breaking 14 length score.

With a family history this rich in talent it is hard not to like Speculating. With class and stamina flowing richly on both sides of his pedigree, the breeding of this colt suggests nothing but potential. While Speculating has yet to record any official works, he is still one to keep an eye on for the future. If this colt inherits even a fraction of the talent that his pedigree suggests, it won’t be long until he finds his way to the winner’s circle and creates a story of his own.

Another young horse that has yet to even post a workout, but still screams excitement and potential, is a gray filly named, Paulistinha. Paulistinha is by champion sire Tapit, who is ranked #5 in the nation. Named America's leading sire in 2014, 2015, and 2016, Tapit has produced offspring that have collectively earned over $122 million on the track.

The class doesn't stop with Tapit for this striking filly. Paulistinha is out of the Giant's Causeway mare, Quiet Giant, the very mare that produced Gun Runner. On the track, Gun Runner won 12 times, with six of those victories coming in Grade 1 races, including the prestigious Breeders' Cup Classic and $16 million Pegasus World Cup. Named Champion Older Male and Horse of the Year in 2017, Gun Runner earned $15,988,500 during his career on the racetrack. If Paulistinha inherits even an ounce of the talent and grit that her half-brother possessed, she will be one formidable competitor once she graces the track.

Dreaming of You is a bay filly by Pioneerof the Nile. She is out of the Honour and Glory mare, General Jeanne. General Jeanne has currently produced seven winners, including multiple stakes winner, Justwhistledixie, who is the producer of Breeders' Cup Juvenile winner, New Year's Day, and multiple graded stakes winner, Mohaymen.

Dreaming of You comes from a rich pedigree, and has been posting steady workouts throughout the entire summer so far. She is currently stabled at Del Mar, where she will work towards her first start.

A strapping chestnut colt by freshman sire, Will Take Charge is yet another new face to follow. The crimson animal is out of the Gone West mare, Alienated, making him a half-brother to the multiple graded stakes placed filly, Alienation, as well as a half-brother to Rally Cry, winner of the 2017 Alydar Stakes and runner-up in the Woodward Stakes (Gr.1). This son of Will Take Charge has been named, Extraterrestrial, and has been posting regular works at Del Mar Racecourse.

A handsome bay colt by Curlin and out of the Honor Grades mare, Honor Bestowed, has a pedigree rich with class and stamina. Named, U.S. Navy Cross, the colt is from a sire that took down 11 races out of 16 starts, including crushing wins in the Preakness Stakes (Gr.1), Woodward Stakes (Gr.1), Breeders' Cup Classic (Gr.1), and Dubai World Cup, just to name a few. Curlin's success on the racetrack carried over brilliantly into his career as a stud, as he has sired countless winners which include the likes of Stellar Wind, Palace Malice, Exaggerator, Connect, and Good Magic.

U.S. Navy Cross comes from a dam that has produced quite a few winners of her own. Honor Bestowed is the dam of graded stakes winners, Recpeta and Taqarub, and graded stakes placed, Defiant Honor.

Next we have a filly named, Double Medal. This bay daughter of Medaglia d'Oro is out of the Tapit mare, Double Tapped. Prestige runs deep in this family line, as Double Tapped is a full sister to Untapable, who won several major stakes races during her career, including the Kentucky Oaks and Breeders' Cup Distaff. Double Tapped is also a half-sister to multiple graded stakes winner, Paddy O' Prado.

Double Medal has already started her career, and made her debut on June 3, at Gulfstream Park. She could do no better than 7th in her debut, but improved dramatically in her most recent start, which took place on July 5. Double Medal entered a 5 furlong maiden special weight on the turf at Gulfstream Park, and finished a solid second.

Last on our list is the highly promising colt, Rowayton. This athletic bay first caught my attention when he went through the sales ring at the Fasig-Tipton Saratoga Yearling Sale in 2017. By Into Mischief and out of the Indian Charlie mare, Rosemonde, Rowayton commanded a solid price of $320,000 at the sale.

There is a lot of lure in Rowayton's pedigree, as he is by a stallion that sired countless winners on multiple racing surfaces, such as Goldencents, Vyjack, Audible, Practical Joke, and Vicar's in Trouble, just to name a few. Potential continues through Rowayton's dam, as Rosemonde comes from a line of strong producers. Rowayton is her first foal, but her own dam, Kid Majic, found great success in the breeding shed, having produced three winners from four offspring to race, including Canadian Champion, Miss Mischief, who just like Rowayton, is by Into Mischief. The superb match between Into Mischief and this female line is proven through Miss Mischief, as she won 9 races during her career, including multiple scores and placings in stakes events.

Owned by OXO Equine and placed in the training care of Jerry Hollendorfer, Rowayton cruised to a 1 1/2 length victory at Del Mar in his debut, when he traveled 5 furlongs on the dirt. Rowayton crossed the wire in a sharp final time of :58.61, leaving a solid group of rivals defeated in his wake. The imposing colt couldn't have won any easier that day, and looks to have a very bright future ahead of him.
